The Basics
Geography - Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates. The second largest emirate, and sits on the shore of the Arabian Gulf Sea.
Climate - Dubai has an exceptional climate, generally expect both sun and blue skies. Temperatures generally, range from to 15C/59F- 48C/118F.
Dress Codes – Although Dubai has a comparatively relaxed dress codes to most parts of the Middle East, when away from the pool and beach both shorts and a shirt should be worn.
Language – The official language of the UAE is Arabic. However, English is widely spoken and understood throughout Dubai.
Time Zone – GMT+ 4 hours
Transport - Generally people travel around Dubai in Taxis. Fares tend to start at Dhs 3 (Dhs 3.50 from 10pm till 6am), going up to Dhs 1.51 per KM.
Currency – Dubai’s currency is the dirham (Dhs).
Newspapers- Several newspapers produced in English which serve the Gulf region, notably Gulf News, Al Khaleej Times, Gulf Today, 7 Days, Emirates Post and Emirates Today.
Religious & National Holidays
- Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday- 10th April 2006.
- Ramadan is the holy month in which muslims commemorate the revelation of the Holy Koran. Due to commence on or about 24th September, depending on sightings of the new moon. During Ramadan no alcohol is served after 7pm and there is no live music, dancing or other entertainment at any time.
If you are outside of your hotel do not eat, chew gum, drink, swear or smoke. - Eid Al Fitr- lasts for three days signalling the end of Ramadan. This holiday is influenced by sightings of the new moon.
- UAE National Day - 2nd December.
- Eid al Adha- Part of the Haji celebrations which lasts for 4 days and commences late December 2006. This holiday is influenced by sightings of the new moon.
